Exercise Isn’t Patentable

We are in Maryland for three days while Cindy goes through testing for Dr. J Carson Smith’s research for exercise and brain health. We are raising funds for this research, which to date has shown more promise for healing brain tissue than any drug trial. While discussing why exercise research does not draw near the funding of drug research, despite having shown greater promise, Dr. Smith stated:

“Exercise isn’t patentable.”

Think about that. Exercise is indeed profitable. Businesses from running shoes to gyms make a pretty penny, so what’s the big deal with being patentable? In short, without a patent that only government can grant and protect, that is to say with genuine free market conditions, multiple proprietors would copy the idea. There would be profits to be had, from Seattle to Boston, there just wouldn’t be concentrated profits from one government granted patent beholding everyone from Seattle to Boston.

Fortunately, folks like Dr. Smith aren’t looking to maximize and concentrate profits.  Did I mention that’s only possible with government? That’s for all the “free market libertarians,” laissez faire economists and corporate funded think tanks out there. No, amazingly enough and contrary to conventional economic wisdom, good folks everywhere are motivated by other things than greed. Many are simply motivated to make the world a better place.

Speaking of which, I took a picture of Dr. Smith by his poster outside his office (see below). With each brain pair the one on the left is before, the one on the right is after exercise. The decrease in red indicates healing. You won’t see posters like that from pharmaceutical research.
