Day 336 – 4/24/12 – Washington, DC

Thompson Boat House to Bladensburg Road; Distance = 10 Miles; People Met = 10

We played the typical tourist through much of this day, taking photos of the Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial, Washington Monument, White House, Capitol, Jefferson Memorial and Supreme Court.  We also met with Congressman Murphy briefly and with his legislative assistant Jesse Young for a longer period.  Will anything come of that meeting?  Only time will tell.  I’m hoping that on certain types of legislation that the Congressman would be supporting anyways I can be called upon for the community angle.

As we passed the Supreme Court a protest of sorts was going on.  People from the Unitarian Universalist Church were expressing their support for immigrants and their families.  Just a block further we saw a sign in front of the United Methodist Church expressing support for them as well.

We had no luck with staying somewhere in the city, even with Krista Lenzmeier the Executive Director from the American Discovery Trail Society looking for us.  We met with Krista at the Wilderness Society the day before.  She debriefed us in regards to our American Discovery Trail experiences and then took us out to lunch.  We had a wonderful, chatty time together.  The reason she had a hard time finding a place for us to stay within city limits is a DC law that prevents churches from allowing the homeless to stay overnight on their premises.  The law was passed in response to such growing numbers of homeless, which is a bit ironic.

We made our way to the outskirts of Washington, DC where Ky came to pick us up.

I know they have team buses but this is a bit extravagant

    Hi Kirk and Cindy,
We’re sitting in our living room reliving the time spent with you guys today – and of course, checking out your website. Have more to review but just thought we’d leave this message – we so… enjoyed meeting and getting acquainted with you both during church and at lunch. We’ve discovered that your cause is close to our hearts. We’ll be keeping up with you primarily by this website and wish you ALL THE BEST!!! God bless all ways!

      Greetings Dolly,
So many times during this trip things just seem to go our way on this trip. Hiking near the Ridgely UMC precisely as service was about to start was one of those times. Remember where we live when you start doing the Appalachian Trail!
      Kirk
