Day 248 – 1/27/12 – Here Comes Santa Claus

Old Route 231 to Fulda; Distance = 15 Miles; People Met = 13+

We walked through the neighboring Lincoln National Park and the town of Santa Claus.  Considering that Santa Claus also features the Holiday World amusement park, they have all the tourist bases covered in this area.

We did not get as much beeps and waves today as we moved further away from Evansville.  The reach of that media coverage was yet in effect.  We stopped at Holiday Foods in Santa Claus to supplement our lunch.  I began to wonder if we would ever get to lunch.  A variety of people stopped us in the aisles to wish us well with our journey.  I’ll include photos of these folks at the end.  A touching encounter was when 80 year-old Walter Beumel came over to our lunch table to invite us to his place to stay.  He said we were doing what he always wished he had the guts to do.  We missed an opportunity to visit the buffalo he raises on his 100-acre spread, but we had another commitment for that evening.

Our final destination for the day was the small town of Fulda.  Ky picked us up from the Village Hut convenience station.  Manager John Wesner informed us of two other ADT travelers that came through two years previous, but could not remember their names.

John, Allysa and Brittney

Ky brought us down to Tell City where we stayed in the home of Mark and Rebecca Fenn.  Rebecca learned of our journey from a UCC church bulletin and reached out to us via my facebook page.  Her and husband Mark are both avid hikers, while Rebecca is Director for United Way in two Indiana counties.  Our journey and mission resonated with their own experiences.  I was glad I had the opportunity to interview Rebecca about a community coalition she was involved in.

While I only interviewed Rebecca about the community coalition there were other projects she was involved in, such as a greenway for Tell City that aimed to both attract young adults to the area and to prevent early diabetes.
