Day 181 – 11/21/11 – White Memorial Camp

Council Grove to Allen; Distance = 17 Miles; People Met = 1

We knocked off the 17 miles today in about 5 ½ hours, a smoking pace.  We break after four miles of road walking now; back in Nevada we started off breaking after every two miles.  The breaks were short because of cool, damp weather and open terrain.  This brought us into Allen early and we went down Main Street to see if there was a café to sit in.  The café closed just shortly before we got there; instead we spent some time chatting with Earl Lyddane.

Earl went to Kansas State while his sons went to KU.  One of the sons went on to medical school at Cornell, my old alma mater.  Earl was involved in the rail to trails conversion of the Missouri Pacific.  According to the copy of our ADT guide the route follows US 56 through here, but will probably follow that rail to trails alternative eventually.  As for now there are many upset landowners, such as the one that accosted Ky when she was only taking pictures near the rail trail.  Earl informed us a landowner had placed a gate on the trail up ahead.

Ky arrived to bring us back to White Memorial Camp for our final evening’s stay.  Not long ago the camp was closed but then they hired Sara Shaw, an experienced camp counselor, to make one last go of it.  Sara charted an inspiring path towards becoming the Executive Director of WMC.  The starting point was a car accident that left her in a coma.  I figured it was best to hear the rest of Sara’s inspiring story straight from her.
