Day 166 – 11/6/11 – United Methodist Church

Kinsley to Garfield; Distance = 13 Miles; People Met = 17+

We hopped between United Methodist Churches today.  In the morning we attended the Kinsley service, the fourth Sunday in a row we were able to do that.  I got to sing in a choir for the first time since the trip started.  Some choir folks did not know my story and asked me to come to rehearsal next week.  In the evening we were invited to a potluck dinner held by the Garfield church.  These two are particularly united in that Pastor Dennis at Kinsley used to be the pastor at Garfield, marrying current parishioners Bob and Cindy 35 years ago.

I talked to Bob a bit at the Garfield church.  As a farmer who had lived there his whole life he lamented how the economy and drought had taken their toll on dwindling numbers for both the town and the church.  I talk about reviving community involvement; Garfield provides evidence for why that is needed.

The Garfield potluck

Ky was able to chat with Pastor Irving and his wife Dorothy during the Garfield potluck.  She mentioned to us afterwards that the pastor might provide us leads for a place to stay in St. Louis at Christmas time.

Sheriff Bobby Blackwell stopped to chat with us for quite a well.  He was a humble young man.  Perhaps because of his youth and my appearance he treated me with the humble deference to an elder.  He provided some very helpful information.  Tornados usually track northeast, so the best escape route is to head southeast.  Bobby also knew someone hiking coast-to-coast, which perhaps explains why he took such an interest in us.
