Day 054 – 7/17/11 Weaver Creek Road to Garrison

Distance = 16.8 Miles; People Met = 4

We talked to 4 people today on an otherwise lonely road stretch of the ADT.  The first was biker Sebastian from Munich, Germany.  Neither of us saw the other in the distance.  Cindy and I were huddled under a sagebrush for a shade break in the morning when Sebastian got off his bike near us to take off his leggings.  We shouted “Hello” but he thought it was some weird stuff in his earphones at first.  He’s bicycling from Salt Lake City to San Francisco.  Like other Europeans he is in awe of the canyon country of the United States.

We turn south and the winds become southerly once again!  This was our worst day going into a headwind yet.  We knew we were not imagining our difficulty when we finally came to a patch of trees and they were bending with the wind.

But all that is secondary to the news that we finished the state of Nevada and hiked our first couple miles in Utah.  Even up to the last day Nevada proved to be a “wet” state, as evidenced by the flooded Snake Creek.  Ted Oxborrow mentioned Nevada had its biggest winter, followed by 9 out of 23 days of rain as we hiked through the state.
