Day 034 – 6/27/11 Phonolite Site Road to Berlin-Ichthyosaur SP

Distance = 19.1 Miles; Elevation Change > 1160 Feet
Lo Elevation = 6341; Hi Elevation = 6786

This was the last day of long road walk, mainly on Buffalo Creek Road once again.  The long, straight dirt road became mind-numbing.  You saw essentially the same view stretched out before you for hours.

That was not the only thing that was numbing.  Usually we have the advantage of the winds at our backs as we hike from west to east.  In an unfortunate convergence our path turned south while the winds, picking up steam, shifted to southerly.  Southerly winds meant increasing temperatures once again.  I usually don’t get chapped lips so I thought nothing of my lips becoming numb.  Then a look in the mirror, something I usually avoid, showed hard red tissue on the extremities of my lips.

We had lunch in Ione together with Norma and John Harpe, two Shoshone Americans who appeared to be the only residents in the town.  Ione and many of the other Nevada towns we encounter rose and fall with mining booms and busts.

The State Park we camped at preserved the busted mining town of Berlin.  Another part of the park featured Ichthyosaur fossils, revealing that the land must have once been under sea.
